Those friends that make you realize how blessed you are to have them in your life.
This weather is really pissing me off. For noo other reasons but that I can’t shoot outfit posts and I have to experience early morning MTA fights. This week alone I experienced 3 train scuffles/arguments. Don’t fret peeps! I’m shooting this week AND taking my talents to a warmer climate. Stay tuned to see where I’ll be heading this week, God willing. (praying my flight isn’t canceled and for traveling mercies. Amen.)
Anyway, tomorrow (Wednesday at 10am), my friend Nysha will be on the Rachel Ray show, sharing her story and how she’s been dealing with Stargardt’s disease! Stargardt’s is a disease that damages the eyes, causing visual impairment. Learn more about the disease on Ny’s blog, Blind Girls See.
My friend is such an inspiration to me. When I learned she had Stargardt’s Disease, I was really distraught. It made me cry. But as Nysha and I got closer (especially this past year), I noticed how much vision Nysha actually has. She never creates handicaps for herself. Legally blind, slowly losing all of her vision, yet strong, fearless, and full of so much vision.
I remember one summer night, me, Nysha, Janelle, and Kelly (some of my closest frineds) wanted to go to Afropunk but I had to finish my Accounting Final Exam before 11:59pm. All of my girls decided to come to my house and help me with my exam (yepp, you can call it cheating). While I was grateful for the help of all of my friends, I was even more inspired by the diligence of Nysha trying to help me solve some of the questions. I noticed some difficulties she had in reading my textbook, but instead of giving up, she asked to use my iPad (she can see better that way). And you know what? She helped me find so many answers on the iPad using Google.
I didn’t mention it to her at the time, but Nysha makes me want to be better. Her story is so inpirational. She’s a woman on fire, refusing to let her vision impairment stop her from succeeding. She’s pursuing her graduate degree and interning at a firm all the way in DC. She has all kinds of cool gadgets and glasses that help her see, and she’s creating the Stargardt’s awareness one blog post at time…
I know a lot of us work tomorrow at 10am so I encourage you all to DVR the episode. You won’t want to miss it, I promise!
God Bless!
Her story is so amazing! She is the definition of not letting her circumstances get in the way of her destiny. You are an amazing friend for remaining by her side and staying true to her. God bless you both!
