Work With What You Already Have

Learning how to be creative with what has already been given to me.

H&M Pleated Dress // Converse Sneakers // Bag from Nicaragua // MAC Chili Lippie

Recently I’ve been trying to regain my creative juices… I didn’t even know it was lost until I caught myself making excuses for my stagnancy. I would look at other bloggers and vloggers and say, “well they have a better camera, a better lens, a better boyfriend, a better photographer, a better bank account…”

Excuses. Excuses. Excuses.  All excuses.

I recall a time when I first started blogging 3 years ago. Oh the excitement… I used to make videos, edit videos on my very slow MacBook, ask any and everyone to take my pictures (especially after church..) and sometimes even take them myself! (Camera, tripod, & nosey neighbors all ahead of me, watching me go!)

And now, even with my sisters in full support of my picture taking obsession, I still find myself making excuses. I’ve promised video on top of video. (I KNOW you all specifically want an updated hair video since many of you think my hair growth is magic. And I have beauty products sitting in front of me that I should have reviewed ages ago!)

Could it be that I lack motivation? Or has it been that I’ve been making excuses for myself when I compare myself and my journey to those of others. God has indeed been dealing with me on this subject. And I thought it necessary to share a thing or two on it…

What is it that you want to do that you haven’t done already?

For me, I have always wanted to make the shift of personal style blogging to “lifestyle” blogging. Personal style blogging is so unfulfilling for me.

Okay- so I share how I wear clothes? What else?

The goal was always to share my other talents. I have a serial passion for professional development and career coaching… I even started another blog but have yet to publish it because, again, EXCUSES. I fear that many of my followers and readers will be confused on the change… But I mean, who should care? Not me.. If it is something that I am passionate about, then certainly that passion should shine through…

We’ve all been given a measure of grace to do something that will bring us fulfillment and success. Tapping into that grace is the tricky part. My suggestion is that we start to work with what we have, and honor God with what we’ve been blessed with.

To make this blog post shorter, I want to challenge you all to do what keeps you up at night. DO it…with intentions on failing…so that when you succeed, you can laugh at yourself for being so afraid of the unknown.

Be blessed!

Great article and post. I am so with you on the excuses part. Just like you, it was me and my tripod and didn’t really care, now I have someone behind the camera, all of a sudden I’m shy and everyone’s watching me! But thank God for this post and great to know I’m not the only one who feels like this. Glad I’ve stumbled across this article and need to stop making excuses and work with what already have, after all it’s what got me here. It can only get better now.

    Be blessed too.

I think it’s normal to have a few things you’re really into. I shifted my blog from fashion to Black women’s plights and the like. And, not that numbers matter, but it actually got me more readers + subscribers.

I say go for it. You’ve already taken the first few steps. And your readers will love you regardless.

Great post, Christina! Use your talent and voice to fulfill your purpose. Sometimes we put too much thought in doing something rather than just praying on it and diving in…well, that’s if you feel at peace about it. It could also be that it’s not the “right” time. All the best! I’m sure you’ll do well in whatever you decide, just go for it !

Great read hun and I agree with you on the excuses we make up for ourselves,”Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure”- this quote always helps reminding me to just go for it… Extend your platform and blog about what you want, your loyal readers will stick with you and you’ll gain more new ones. btw love the outfit xx
