Because I’m from New York City.
In NYC, hardly anyone ever stares at me; even while I’m shooting with my photographer (tourists not included). There’s an aura about NYC that allows for creativity and extreme style. Fashion trends? We’ve seen them all. Weird fashion trends? Yeah, that too. Stilletos to the supermarket? But isn’t that what everyone does?…
It’s only when I travel outside of NYC that I realize how very accepting NYC is of creative persons. I guess that’s why people dream of living in this city.
It is quite interesting how different other places are; but also how people easily adapt to their environments. I remember moving to Philly and completely transforming my style to fit in. Now as I get older, I’m learning to be who I am, intrinsically; and not who I think I should be according to my environment’s standards. So yes, heels to the supermarket, when I feel like it. Even if I’m in the most remote town of South Dakota.
